CHAPTER 13—JEREMY

IT WAS Friday night when I first brought him home and Sunday afternoon when he left. I had to elbow him out the door finally, after he let slip that he had an assignment due for school. I was about to skip another shift, which would have been great news for all the other servers who wanted my big-money weekend shifts, but hey, this was worth it. I only lied about being sick so they wouldn’t think I was going to make a habit of handing away the shifts I’d worked so hard to get. Screwing up his school, however—that just felt gross. I drew the line.

I was cutting it close to get ready for work in time. Luckily, I’m smart enough—or enough of a party boy—to always keep a backup pre-ironed shirt in the closet for times like this, and I was able to clean up pretty fast. Technically, I was on time, but “on time” didn’t leave me the usual minutes I needed to prep stuff, so I had to hit the ground running. The restaurant was packed. I worked my ass off for hours, talking up the Kahlua mousse and the wine pairing we had going on and juggling a million orders and requests, but never once did I feel my phone vibrate in my back pocket. I was waiting for his text, I realized. I never did that. Why was I doing it now? Hadn’t I been the asshole that said “Waiting is for wankers”?

I made sure all my tables were happy and then grabbed a second in the corner of the kitchen and texted him. I miss you already. Work is insane.

I was on my way out of the kitchen doors when my phone vibrated, and I detoured to the bathroom and locked myself into a stall. It was him. It said, I’m dying over here. Tell them you’re having a relapse and I’ll come and get you.
